Overview & Highlights

This is for you if: You are new to kayaking and are interested in getting into the sport or are already experienced and want to improve.

Structured similarly to our Flatwater Kayak Fun Day, the Flatwater Kayak Instructional goes into greater detail on the boats, equipment, fundamentals, strokes, safety considerations and boat handling techniques that will help both those with no experience who are interested in getting into the sport and more experienced paddlers interested in taking their paddling to the next level.

After the land-based instruction the rest of the day will be spent on the water, first in a protected cove working on fundamentals and strokes before embarking into the main channel where you will continue to refine your paddling with the help of your instructor. You'll take a well-earned break on a wooded island for lunch (the views are spectacular) before paddling back to where we started to wrap up a great day on the water.

Kayak, paddle and life jacket are provided although participants are welcome to bring their own if they prefer. If you would like to use our kayaks and gear, indicate how many in your party would like to do in the Kayak Add-On field.

  • What to Expect

    • Learn/review flatwater kayak anatomy, types and proper outfitting
    • Learn/review types and uses of necessary and recommended equipment
    • Learn/review safety considerations, practices and rules of the water
    • Learn and practice kayaking fundamentals and strokes with regular instructor feedback
    • Enjoy a flatwater paddle on a beautiful lake while continuing to refine paddling technique
    • Have fun!

  • Prerequisites

    • Be comfortable on open water
    • Possess a level of health and fitness commensurate with paddling a kayak for 30-45 mins without stopping and 2-3 hours total
    • Participants must wear a PFD (personal flotation device) while on the water

  • Includes

    • Guiding/instruction
    • Top-of-the-line recreational kayak (as needed)
    • Paddle (as needed)
    • Life jacket (PFD)
    • Dry bag
    • Guided paddle tour 

  • What to Bring

    Swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, wicking type shirt for wear on the water, water shoes or shoes you don't mind getting wet, drinking water or sports drink, bagged lunch (we will give you a dry bag to put it in), camp chair, rain jacket (weather dependent); kayak, paddle and PFD if you have them (otherwise we will provide them)

  • Meeting Location

    We will meet at Watauga Point Recreation Area near Hampton, TN by the pavilion.

  • Additional Information

    Camping is available close by at Cardens Bluff Campground  and Boot's Off Campground and Hostel. The closest hotels are in Elizabethton, TN, approximately 20 minutes away. Lodging and camping is also available at our outpost on the Nolichucky River (about 45 mins away) and can be reserved directly with either USA Raft  or Nolichucky Gorge Campground.

    I certify that all registrants meet course prerequisites as defined in the course description, meet the minimum age requirements and do not have any medical conditions or limitations that would prevent their ability to safely participate in the activity.

  • Cancellation policy

    NOLI activities go rain or shine. If you cancel or decrease the number of participants in your party the following applies:

    Cancellations 30 or more days prior to your activity will receive a full refund.
    Cancellations 14-29 days prior to the activity date will receive a full reservation booking voucher.
    Cancellations 0-13 days prior to the activity date are not extended a refund or voucher.
    No Shows are not extended a refund or voucher.
