Overview & Highlights
This is for you if: you’ve been curious about backpacking but have little to no overnight experience sleeping outdoors in the wilderness.
This weekend course is designed specifically for hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts who have little or no overnight camping experience in the outdoors and would like to try backpacking in a supportive, low stress environment. By the end of the weekend, participants will have acquired the knowledge and confidence to plan an enjoyable multi-day backpacking trip using established trails/campsites plus a foundation on which to build more advanced skills. Our route has been specially selected for its short hiking distance and low difficulty, as well as its access to waterfalls and other natural wonders, to help participants dip their toes into the wonderful world of backpacking while being guided by highly experienced and supportive instructors. Your instructors, Rob Schoborg and Michelle Duffourc, are avid backpackers and hikers with a passion for helping others safely enjoy the outdoors.
We'll meet the afternoon of the first day at the Laurel Fork Trailhead in Hampton, TN, for introductions and to make sure everyone is properly outfitted and packed, and then embark on our journey. Our pace will be carefully tailored to the group, and we will take regular breaks to rest and periodically learn new skills. We will hike ~ 2 miles to our campsite for the night. As night falls, we'll relax by a fire (conditions permitting), recount the day and enjoy good company. Or maybe you'd prefer to watch the stars gradually make their appearance in peaceful silence - it's your call. Our instructors will be happy to answer any backpacking, hiking or general outdoor questions you may have. The next day we will pack up and group members will have the option exploring not one, not two, but THREE (3) nearby waterfalls – a delightful way to cool off on a warm summer day. We will eventually return to the trailhead to wrap up our overnight backpacking adventure with new memories and new friends.
Backpack, tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag and sleeping bag liner (laundered prior to use) are provided, although participants are welcome to bring their own if they have them. Participants will also have access to cooking stoves and water filters. A full packing list will be provided to help you prepare. Spots are limited to 8 in order to minimize our footprint so be sure to register early to reserve your spot. Minimum age is 10. Route length and direction of travel may be modified at instructor's discretion to best accommodate the group.
